I have always deemed resilience to be one of the most admirable God-given traits. The ability to bounce back, heal, and potentially become something better in a world void of instruction manuals sounds like something out of Mythology. It’s not though. I know this because I have seen proof of its existence throughout black history, black culture, and my own lived experiences as a black woman in America. I liken that experience to one of a mermaid.
See, mermaids are symbols of resilience for me because they were able to evolve and thrive in an environment that they should not have been able to SURVIVE in.
Through troubled waters, they transformed and became something more. A marvel in both worlds. Never fish enough to be fully embraced by water and never human enough to be happy on land.
Much of my work delves deeper into this ideology and features figures and animals in a way that urges the viewer to find the deeper meaning while encouraging introspection as well. Every creative decision I make is intentional, from the colors I choose, to the subject matter and there are always multiple themes to speak of. I believe that this allows each piece to continue to evolve with the viewer as they notice new themes and spark new conversations!
